NORRIS POINT KAYAKS
THE VIEW FROM MY DECK My studio looks out over beautiful Bonne Bay in Gros Morne National Park, and is a wonderful place to be working on the images that interest me - the seascapes and the coastal communities of Newfoundland, and sometimes of Scotland, which is where I grew up. The process of etching (or intaglio) that I use makes use of copper plates that have been covered with different kinds of grounds, mainly hard ground and rosin aquatint. Generally, the image is drawn onto the hard ground and etched into the copper, and the eventual tones of the image, which resemble watercolour, are created with successive etching of the aquatint. The plates are inked up directly with coloured inks using a process called “A La Poupee,” which consists of putting all the colours onto one plate using little bits of rag and card, and allows me to avoid using multiple plates in order to produce a print with a wide colour range. In 2010 I received a grant from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council to produce a suite of etchings based on aerial views of the Park. One of those prints, “A String of Boats,” has been included in this exhibition. I’m very grateful to the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council for assisting me with this project, which continues to inspire new and different work. Tessa May, 2012
