Trevor Bates was born in London, England, in 1921. He was a pilot in the RAF from 1939 to 1945. After the war he studied at The Slade School of Fine Art for four years, after which he moved to Paris and worked under sculptor Ossip Zadkine of the new Cubist movement. In 1960 he was made the head of the Sculpture Department at the Hornsey College of Art in London, England , where he stayed until 1967. Upon immigrating to Canada, Bates taught in the New Brunswick public school system and was represented by Cassel Gallery in Fredericton. In 1986 he moved to Belleville, Ontario where he worked on painting and sculpting full time. Trevor Bates' work can be found in numerous public collections including The University of New Brunswick, The New Brunswick Art Bank, Mount Allison University, The National Museum of Wales, The Welsh Arts Council, Victoria and Albert Museum, Western Australian Art Gallery, and Bangor University, as well as many private collections.
