Meghan Stewart was born on Queen Charlotte Island but grew up in Rural Nova Scotia, in the small village of Tatamagouche . Here she was surrounded by the beauty of nature and the bounty of the earth; elements which continue to inspire her work.

She was brought up in a very creative environment. Her mother was a textile artist who worked out of a studio in their home. Meghan's natural associations with artistic expression are rooted in the creative surroundings and experimentation of several different mediums during her childhood.

With a deep interest in fabrics and fashion, she began her education believing that fashion design would be her major. Soon after starting her first year at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, she began to work with clay, immediately falling in love with the medium.

Meghan continues to work with clay. She as developed a unique style of functional and sculptural work, combining throwing and hand building. Her work is graced with fine detail and intricate drawings.

Meghan has graduated from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with a Diploma in Clay.

Artist Statement

I am inspired by history, nature and the gestures of the human body and hope to reproduce the animation and liveliness of these elements.

My work, though simple in form has a complexity derived from my touch on the clays surface and a delicate attention to detail. I think of my pottery as a canvas, constantly adding and subtracting; manipulating the clay and applying texture and decoration.

I see my work as a reflection of my experience and a record of my life. I notice wonder in small things and am moved to highlight them.
