Leigh Merritt was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick and grew up in the rural community of Tay Creek where he currently resides. After completing his BA with honours in English Language and Literature and a major in the Great Idea’s program at St. Thomas University he went on to study at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. There he earned a Foundation Visual Arts Certificate in 2006, a Certificate in Specialty Photography in 2008, a Diploma in Fine Craft – Ceramics in 2010, and a Certificate in Advanced Studies in Visual Arts in 2011.

In 2010 he received the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show in Halifax and was awarded the Duffie-Crowell Award at graduation. In June 2010 he traveled to Medicine Hat,  Alberta, to attend a ceramics residency at The Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics.
