Kyle Cunjak has studied Fine Arts at Mount Allison University and is a 2005 graduate from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with a Diploma in Photography. It's been very busy for Kyle since his graduation as he has been exhibiting in a number of group shows at the Andrew and Laura McCain Gallery in Florenceville, the Saint John Art Centre, the UNB Art Centre, Saint Thomas University and the Fredericton Public Library, as well as solo exhibitions at Gallery 78, Owen's Art Gallery, Sackville and Salle Sans Sous, Moncton. Kyle is a freelance photographer for award-winning Gooselane Editions, Chocolate Magazine, the Province of New Brunswick and the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival. His work can be seen regularly in Here magazine, the Brunswickan and a number of Maritime music magazines. In 2007, Kyle was named best breakthrough artist by the Telegraph-Journal newspaper. In addition to his photography skills, Kyle is an accomplished musician and tours regularly.

Kyle's photographs have appeared in national photography magazines PhotoEd (winter 2005), Applied Arts (Vol. 20, No. 4) and PhotoLife (Vol. 29, No. 5), as well as gracing the cover of Douglas Glover's novel "Precious".

Artist's Statement:

These works are part of two themes I have been exploring throughout my artistic endeavors; traditional and nocturnal landscapes. These two bodies of work, while they may seem far removed from one another, are both landscape photography - but they differ in process.

In my daytime photography, I attempt to capture and preserve a scene that catches my eye. It is my hope that people viewing these images will find something familiar within them, while they most likely will not recognize the locations. With the night photography I am looking for something interesting to shoot, then building upon that object by saturating it with artificial light and colours. This method often transforms a typical landscape into something completely different and surreal.

The images are either hand-printed in a darkroom from 120 negatives or scanned at high quality for digital output. Using film allows me to control my exposures on bright days, does not limit my output size and creates interesting colour shifts when shooting at night. Working with a medium format camera appeals to me not only because of its incredible sharpness when enlarged but also because the square is an interesting compositional tool.

Whether I was driving down the highway, walking on the beach or exploring an unknown back road, something in these scenes inspired me to preserve them. Most of these locations were found randomly; I am constantly amazed and delighted at my good fortune when I stumble upon something interesting.
