ARTIST'S STATEMENT After working exclusively in watercolour for over sixteen years, the past two years have been a rediscovery of my passion for oils. My love of carefully composed still life has grown in scale and become more simplified in arrangement, yet more intense in both color and focus. Shine is a collection of paintings which captures detailed observations about familiar objects. The play of light, shadow and reflections across crystal bowls, cutlery, jelly jars and tin foil offers a feast for the eyes – taking the viewer on a journey of discovery through a roadmap of colour and composition. Although each work has its own short story or reason of creation, I hide no particular meaning or references in my paintings. They are what they are – straightforward images – an interpreted moment of something I felt was a visual “ wow ”. My technique in oils includes thin layers of paint, devoid of obvious brushstrokes, which I feel enhance my realistic presentation. I particularly enjoy soft edges and gentle transitions of value and colour – traits which lend a pastel or airbrushed quality to the work. Since I dislike the bounce of traditional canvas, I prefer to prime and prepare my own hardboard surface to an eggshell finish and work mainly with soft nylon brushes, not usually the choice of oil painters. As an artist and teacher, one of my greatest pleasures is hearing a viewer of my work say something like,“I never would have looked at it that way”. To me, I've opened a door for that person to realize and enjoy more of the world around them.
TWENTY-TO-TWELVE
Joanne M. Hunt is a full-time artist based just outside Halifax, Nova Scotia . Described as a contemporary realist, she creates watercolour and oil paintings with an emphasis on strong design. Her art investigates the details found in everyday objects, often featuring glass, chrome and other challenging surfaces, and strives to reveal the hidden visual wonders too often unnoticed. Largely self-taught as a painter, Joanne's background is in graphic design. She was elected to the prestigious Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC) in 2002 and also to the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) in 2005. Her work has won numerous awards at national exhibitions and can be found in collections across Canada, the US and England .
