Jessie Babin was born in Dalhousie, New Brunswick in 1990. Ever since she can remember she has loved drawing. Growing up she dreamt of becoming a makeup artist or a comic book artist. Jessie is a 2012 graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Her preferred medium is drawing and her favourite tool remains a simple graphite pencil, but she also enjoys working in ink and charcoal. Jessie’s work is mostly representational, often created using unconventional techniques and media such as smoke with the flame of a candle or lighter. She considers photography, film, fashion and the human body as her most important influences. Jessie’s work has been part of two group exhibitions at the Centennial library in Dalhousie. In 2008 she was selected to represent New Brunswick as a visual artist at the Jeux de la Francophonie in Edmonton, Alberta. In 2011, she was one of three young artists chosen to represent New Brunswick at the Canada Winter Games as part of the National Artists Program. She had a solo exhibition of charcoal drawings at the Capital Theatre in Moncton in May 2012. It was her large-scale charcoal drawing entitled “The Fall” that Jessie created as part of a final project at NSCAD University in the spring of 2012 which was selected by the BMO Financial Group as the NS art school winner of their 1st national Art! Invitational Art Competition. An exhibition of the provincial winners was mounted at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto in October 2012. Her drawings have been exhibited at Gallery 78 since 2011. |
