Fredericton born artist Eric Louis Budovitch has a polyglot art background. The young painter became disillusioned in his search for a traditional fine-arts education after attending both York University in Toronto and Concordia in Montreal. Traditional tutelage, including life drawing and mentorship, is a surprisingly rare area of knowledge today.

Initially, he opted for studying Art History at McGill University in Montreal. After attaining his degree, he desired more technical direction in his art-making. Frustrated by the lack of opportunity for a structured education in art-making in Canada, he turned his quest to the United States and Europe.

In 1999, he successfully applied to the Graduate School of the New York Academy of Art in New York City and was offered a healthy scholarship. Two years later, he graduated with a Master of Fine Art.

The Academy offered a great deal, but Eric wanted more. While attending his official program downtown, he also managed to study uptown at the prestigious Art Student's League, one of North America's oldest art schools and a place where great painters like Thomas Eakins have taught. He studied under world renowned portraitist Nelson Shanks, who had recently finished commissioned paintings of Pope John Paul II and President Bill Clinton. While in New York, he also spent a great deal of time studying and copying the work of the old masters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

After graduation Eric traveled to Norway to study privately under Odd Nerdrum. Nerdrum is a senior artist of great international acclaim whose paintings are exhibited around the world. After this mentorship, Eric felt ready to launch his own career with his own personal vision.

Along with art making, Eric teaches art in Toronto, providing his students with the classical education in art he found so difficult to attain. He has exhibited his work with great success in Toronto, Montreal and New York City.
