The paintings of artist Carolyn Purdy embody a balanced combination of two great influences in her aesthetic development: the oeuvre of Gustav Klimt and the people and ambience of Mexico . Her still life images and figural studies blend the fascination of Klimt's paintings and the prismatic dynamism of Mexico . It is Klimt's treatment of space – a flattening in the tradition of Matisse – and his extraordinary blend of colour and stylised design that resonates with Purdy's own analysis of form and composition. Carolyn then mixes into those interests a healthy dose of Mexican vibrancy and energy. She travels to Mexico every winter with her artistic eye and is overwhelmed continually by the colours and the intrinsic artistic nature of the people. She says herself that “one cannot help but be affected by the light of the people”. Whether this impact emerges in her figures, or more implicitly in the interior images, the drama of Mexico adds piquancy to the Klimt influences, and the overall result is paintings with boldness and excitement. Born in Winnipeg , Carolyn was influenced at an early age by her artist mother who was a student of the Group of Seven artist Lemoine Fitzgerald. Carolyn has lived in Winnipeg , Toronto , Halifax and Switzerland and now resides in Fredericton . But it seems to be on her voyages that her eye is most influenced: in Mexico each year, and in Austria and the Czech Republic where she travelled recently on the trail of Klimt with a group of fifteen artists. The influences are intriguing, but it is the originality of Carolyn's world-view painted onto her canvases that make for wonderful works of art.
