Conrad Furey was born in Baie Verte, Newfoundland, in 1954. He studied commercial art in St. John's before moving to Ontario where he graduated from the creative art program at Sheridan College, Brampton, in 1974.

The only child out of a family of 11 to leave Newfoundland, Furey made his home in Ontario. However, his work shows that long after we leave certain places, our connections to them remain strong.

He had been painting for thirty years. Furey considered himself a self-taught artist with his work inspired by his native Newfoundland, and bordering on the naif in style.

The bulk of his success had been with memories of his east coast upbringing. His portrayals of everyday life in Newfoundland were most definitely Canadian, but had a universality that made them appreciated by people from all corners. Furey used vibrant, primary colours which emphasized the rich, diverse and warm culture of Newfoundland. Furey didn't solely concentrate on fishing, but also other integral aspects of Newfoundland life such as music, dance, and community.

His works are acrylic on canvas and acrylic on wood construction, but he has also done work in stone, bronze and resins.

Furey's work is part of prestigious public, corporate and private collections.

Conrad Furey passed away on January 23, 2008.
