Cheryl Bogart was born in McAdam , New Brunswick in 1947. She moved to Lower Jemseg after her father's death when she was three years old. She has continued to live in Jemseg, raising her own family not far from her childhood home. She loved art from an early age and turned to drawing and painting as a serious endeavour after the birth of her youngest son in 1982. Although not formally trained, she was encouraged to continue painting early on in her career by the artist Mary Pratt. The senior painter admired her work and told her that pursuing one's own vision could be just as worthwhile as academic study. Bogart shares with Pratt a high realist style and attention to detail, but diverges in her characteristic inclusion of a surreal twist, often accomplished through juxtapositions in time and with subtle commentaries on changing gender roles. Her work has matured to a high level of technical excellence. Her delicate brushwork and exquisite attention to detail are the artist's forte. It has been said of her work, “They are like jewels plucked from the grasp of time, encouraging viewers to create a narrative setting for the lonely figures inhabiting her realistic landscapes. These are thought-provoking works that invite prolonged contemplation. “ Cheryl's work has appeared in numerous exhibitions, both solo and group. She has won several awards, including Honourable Mention in the Marion McCain Juried Art Exhibition held at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in 1987 and again in 1989. In 1996 her work was included in an exhibition of Canadian art in Taiwan. Her paintings are in the permanent collection of the Canada Council Art Bank, the University of Moncton and in private collections in Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia.
