ARTIST STATEMENT

My work investigates the possibility of colour and translucency in liquid porcelain. Originally an industrial material, I became interested in exploring slip-cast porcelain in the studio after a studio tour in Scandinavia in 1983. This trip included a course in thermal walled mold making at the Art College in Copenhagen.

More recently, the formation of sedimentary rock led to discovering how to represent layers of colour using metallic oxides directly in the porcelain material. This rapid geological process is achieved when the clay is in liquid form and then sets up on plaster. Many of these pieces are unglazed, but the satin finish is durable and can be scoured with any abrasive.

Finally, newer work is becoming impossibly thin, and uses fine lines of colour. All pieces are hand built or cast in studio molds.
