Stephen Scott

ARTIST PROFILE

Stephen Scott has called the Fredericton area home throughout most of his career painting. After studying at the Ontario College of Art in the early 1970's he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University in 1978. In 1998 he earned a Master of Arts degree in Art Therapy at Concordia University in Montreal. He travelled and did independent study in Belgium 1980-1981, in Sweden in 1991 and in Berlin, Germany in 2003-2004 and 2005.

Stephen's figurative work pushes beyond the traditional bounds of naturalism to explore the emotional and psychological depths of his subject, and in so doing, courageously opens a window upon the artist himself. His portraits and his landscapes are exquisitely rendered with deft handling of the materials and an intuitive grasp of subject that brings an emotional weight to the work.

Stephen has exhibited in many private and non-commercial gallery exhibitions. His work can be found in public, corporate and private collections and has been included in curated exhibitions among which have been "Portraits, New Brunswick Painters" at the New Brunswick Museum, “Art Treasures of New Brunswick”, "Stephen Paints a Picture" at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and ”Contemporary Currents; Nine New Brunswick Artists” at the University of Maine Museum of Art.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The consistency of my work lies in the expressive struggle to use the image as a bridge between the felt and the observed.
